Regatta report

The BHYC Regatta was held on Saturday and Sunday the 23/24th August 2008. The weather conditions on both days were very similar with a force 4 to 5 South Westerly wind, mostly dry but cloudy with little sunshine. This produced a comparatively choppy sea at least from the perspective of an Optimist! The Regatta was well supported on both days with boats from Seaview, Bembridge Sailing Club and BHYC but none, regrettably but understandably, from the RVYC. There was a short delay of approximately five minutes to the starting cycle on both days arising principally from awaiting the arrival of competitors to the start area.

The fast handicap boats were required to sail an Olympic Course 1 on both days whilst the slower classes had to complete a varying number of laps of a triangular course. There were few incidents of note with only one boat in two days of racing being OCS at the start. There was some good racing on both days, highlights included the close finish between Barry Dyer and Graham Sutton in the Scow race on Sunday, the pace of the Flying Fifteen sailed by John & Rupert Mander on Saturday and especially the stamina and determination of the younger competitors on both days. I was particularly impressed by the two lads from BSC in their Oppies on Sunday (the only entrants that day) who showed a remarkable determination to finish what was probably too long a course for them on the day. It was also pleasing to see a number of Swans taking part on both days.

All in all a good two days racing with almost inevitably one or two grumbles which I believe were amicably resolved. Everybody regretted the absence of Ray Hurst who was unwell and we hope he will be back to full health soon!

The results to three places of the races on both days are listed below; first column, saturday, second column Sunday.
