Conditions

Boats are borrowed by Authorised BHYC Members only.

Authorised members are those who have shown evidence of sailing competence and are issued with an ‘A’ or ‘B’ ticket – see below.

Boats are only available for use during organised club activities when there is safety boat cover on the water.

For members wishing to participate in Club Racing, Cruising or Pottering and whose sailing competence is unknown or in doubt, a sailing test must be undertaken prior to borrowing a boat. This will be carried out by a Club RYA Dinghy Sailing Instructor. Following the test, (which may include a capsize drill) members will be issued with an ‘A’ or ‘B’ ticket. The ticket will also indicate which type of boat the member is permitted to borrow.

‘A’. (= RYA Level 3+ standard) - Members may participate in cruising or racing when these activities are offered.

‘B’ (= RYA Level 2 standard) - Members may participate in cruising or racing in wind strength ≤ F4 (16 knots).

  1. Members participating in racing, or pottering* around the race course, must SIGN ON, notify and present ticket to the Race Officer of the day, who will also alert support boats. The support boat crews will be required to monitor these dinghies as part of the race fleet. Final authorisation will be at discretion of Race officer. Upon return, members must SIGN OFF and notify Race Officer.
  2. Members must NOT launch prior to commencement of club activity and must return with safety craft at end of activity.
  3. If in the opinion of the safety boats those racing or pottering should retire for time or safety reasons they should do so immediately.
  4. Members must sign form agreeing to conditions.

* Boats ‘pottering’ around the race course (Fast or Slow) should be advised to keep well clear of race marks and race competitors.
