The facilities available to Club Members and their guests at the Brading Haven Yacht Club official opening ceremony on 4 June 1950 consisted of a former paint shed some 26 feet in length, clad in corrugated iron, and painted green so as to ‘enhance its appearance'. Most of the furniture and fittings were second-hand donations from members, and the catering was provided by the ladies' committee using calor gas rings and an old galvanized bath for washing up. A small car park did exist but most parking was along the embankment, which was still a toll road.
The club has come a long way since then, mainly through members carrying out the work themselves, thus keeping subscription fees low. Today it boasts:
- a large bar managed by our bar staff
-
Gents' and ladies' changing rooms, showers, and facilities;
-
A modern office from which the club secretary and treasurer operate;
-
A workshop for the club boatman and a store for use by cadets and sail training;
-
Boat shed and sail store;
-
Three pontoons, two slipways and extensive boat parking facilities;
-
A large car park.
Approximately 1000 members, 70 racing days, 25 visiting rallies, 25 social functions (excluding private hire) and 30 training days a year place a heavy burden on these facilities, the maintenance of which is the responsibility of the House Committee. |
The committee strives to ensure that the fabric of the buildings is not only maintained but is well presented, and improved wherever possible. If as a club member, or as a visitor, you feel that there are areas of concern we would like to hear from you. We are always open to suggestions for improvements although we cannot guarantee that funds can be made available immediately, but as a member you can help make the money go further by offering your services. |
If you are a plumber, electrician, builder, decorator, or just have good DIY skills and would be happy to be approached should we require that skill, then please do get in touch, either via one of the committee members, by placing a note in the comment book in the foyer, by leaving a note in the pigeon hole for House, or by email to house@bhyc.org.uk. |
House Committee

Its membership consists of a Chairman (Flag Officer), two members appointed by the Management Committee, and up to six co-opted members. In addition, all other sub-committee Chairmen, the Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer are ex-officio voting members.

MESSAGE FROM REAR-COMMODORE HOUSE CLUB CLEANER
I hope you will have noticed recently that the state of cleanliness in the Club House has improved dramatically. The old cleaners departed at the end of last year and we now welcome Sally Pullinger who has taken on the task and who is determined that she will make a difference. Her start was, like everything else on the Island, delayed by the recent snow, but she is now gradually working through giving everywhere a ‘deep clean' to bring it to the standard she plans to maintain. |
Contrary to previous arrangements, Sally will be working in the mornings during the hours that the Club is open, certainly during the winter months, so you may see her at work. Please remember that Sally has a job to do and is working for us to keep the Club clean and tidy for you. She is kept aware of bookings and works around them, and will accommodate impromptu meetings when they occur.
Very occasionally if Sally is called away her partner James will be there doing the job in her stead. |
I am sure everything will work very smoothly, but if you do encounter any difficulties, rather than tackling Sally please either speak to the Bar Manager if she is on the premises, or contact me by emailing to House through the Club's website, by leaving a message in the House pigeon hole, or by putting a note in the comments book in the foyer. |
