................ ..............Sailing Programme 2008

Our aim is to encourage safe and enjoyable sailing for all members. While much of the activity surrounds racing, it is the desire of the sailing committee to ensure that you enjoy sailing your boat whether you wish to compete or not. We shall also be organising many non-racing activities and training during the year. Please do ask a member of the Sailing Committee or the Boatman should you require advice or assistance (contact details below).

Racing

Racing instructions covering all club races will be available at the Annual Briefing on 16 th March and afterwards from the bar or Race-Box and on this web site. Preliminary information is available here. Racing instructions covering the events organised under the East Wight Combined Clubs umbrella will be issued in the summer as part of their Regatta Series Programme. It is essential that helms sign the indemnity form in the Race Box before their first sail of the season. For details of Classes and Class Captains click here.

On Weekends 7 th / 8 th June and 30th / 31st August Bembridge Sailing Club will supply the Race Officer and Committee Boat, and their dinghies will race alongside ours. These races will form part of our normal series and will comprise two separate races starting and finishing at the Committee Boat.

Scows will compete with other Slow Handicap Class dinghies in the Icebreaker, Easter, Evening and Frostbite series. Scow interclub racing will be indicated on the Notice board and e-Newsletter. The NEW Icebreaker series will be for Slow H/C boats only and open to all IOW Clubs.

A chart of the racing marks to be used for BHYC club racing is also available from the bar at £2 per copy.

Cadets and Novices

Cadet and novices are encouraged to join in the Racing Programme at any time. If requested, assistance on the course and the conduct of the race will be given by the Race Officer and those on the support boats. There is one race specifically for Novices. In each crewed boat the helm must be a novice with less then 2 seasons racing experience. In each single-hander (including Scows) the helm must be a novice but an experienced advisor may be carried.

BHYC Regatta & Cadet Regatta

The BHYC Regatta will take place on 23rd and 24th August. Details will be printed on the East Wight Combined Clubs Programme that also provides information on other local regattas. The BHYC Cadet Regatta will take place on Sunday 10 th August with all events in the Harbour off the Club House.

Wayfarers

2008 is the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the Wayfarer Class Association. Many of us will have learnt to sail in, cruised or raced this magnificent boat. There will again be a race series for Wayfarers and a special 50th Championship on 21st June. The Wayfarer Shield will be awarded to the crew who have managed the most race starts over the course of the season. Several crews shall be attempting to sail around the Island as part of the celebrations.

Sailing Support

Do come and support our racing and other sailing activities by offering to help on our support boats or ashore. Helms require a minimum of RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate and a VHF Certificate. Crews need no qualifications, but are expected to be reasonably fit and agile! In 2008 we shall be running the NEW BHYC Safety & Support Boat course designed specially for existing helms. Crews wishing to gain qualifications should watch the notice board and e-newsletter for details of courses. For more information click here.

Borrowing Club Boats

The Club owns several sailing boats ( Wayfarers, Picos, 420, Toppers, Optimists ) that may be borrowed by club members with appropriate experience for £10 per session. Boats are only available for use during club activities, including racing, when there is BHYC safety and support cover on the water. For full details, terms and conditions click here.
