For 60 years Brading Haven Yacht Club have organised their sailing races from a series of garden sheds sited just to the east of the main club house. During this period the only major improvement to this facility occurred in 1955 when glazing was installed in the windows, but despite these somewhat spartan conditions a number of these huts found their way into the hearts of the various Race Officers with one such hut threatened with replacement having an ode dedicated to it in the 1970's. Who better therefore should the honour of officially opening the latest facility go to other than retired Race Officer and author of this ode, Roy Knight? Roy was joined in the honour of cutting the ribbon by another ex Race Officer Pat Mathews and face for the future cadet Izzy McInnes, all of whom having performed the honours where able to admired the double glazing, insulation, heating, facilities for making hot drinks as well as the interactive board and projection system available to today's race officers.
The new centre was built entirely by members; the main funding came directly from member donations with a substantial grant by the Sandown Sports Partnership. The centre will not only continue to serve as race HQ but will triple up as a sail training centre and committee room as well as being available for hire for similar use by other organisations and groups.
Pat cut the ribbon to open the centre ..............and was presented with a bouquet.
The event was attended by about 100 club members and their guests who not only enjoyed the sun and BBQ and toasted every success to the new centre but were also provided with an opportunity to step aboard the new Bembridge Lifeboat for a guided tour of the vessel by members of its crew.
