RYA Level 1 Start Sailing
at Brading Haven Yacht Club
Requirements:
Open to young people and adults (16+) with no previous sailing experience required. Participants should be water confident, able to swim, and bring suitable clothing for outdoor conditions (including footwear that can get wet).
Course Duration:
This is a 2-day course running from 9:00am 5:00pm each day.
Key Learning Points Covered:
- Rigging, launching and recovering a dinghy independently
- Sailing upwind (close-hauled) and downwind (running)
- Tacking and gybing with control
- Improving boat handling and sail trim
- Ropework and securing the boat
- Basic collision avoidance and sailing rules
Outcome & Progression:
By the end of the course, you'll be a competent sailor able to sail in light to moderate winds without supervision. You'll be awarded the RYA Level 2 certificate. From here, you can progress to RYA Level 3 Better Sailing, start racing, or sail independently at your club.
