Onshore Events and Activities

BHYC holds a number of ticketed and one-off events, both formal and informal. These include the Summer Ball, Fitting Out and Laying Up Suppers, a Regatta Champagne Reception, a number of Christmas and New Year parties and dinners, as well as barbecues, murder-mystery evenings and themed party nights. We host visiting yacht clubs and rallies, as well as Bembridge Marina visitors. We also welcome outside organisations who hire the Club facilities as a venue for their own event, and often they invite BHYC Members to join them - more information HERE.

A wide variety of regular events and activities take place throughout the year, although some are suspended briefly during the very busiest period in the summer to allow other activities to take place, including:

  • Bingo Nights - run by Club Member and ViceCommodore Jerry Summers, the Bingo Nights are extremely popular and great fun. Supper is available on the night, with booking essential. Usually runs from Autumn to Spring.
  • Coffee Club - a good way to meet other members new and old, what better way to spend a morning than enjoying the harbour views from the Club House.
  • Gentlemen's Breakfast - A cooked breakfast prepared by our Galley staff, often accompanied by a short talk or presentation by one of the Club Members.
  • Ladies Luncheon - Once a month lunch-time meeting with lunch provided by the Galley. The July and August meetings are usually held at an outside venue to make room for sailing events during the summer holiday period.
  • Quiz Night - a monthly quiz held on weekday evenings late Autumn to Early Spring.
  • Games Afternoon - Join other members for a game of Scrabble or Rummikub every month Autumn to Spring.
  • Winter Talks - Another monthly Autumn to Spring activity, talks on an amazingly wide variety of topics. Supper is usually available as well, and booking is essential for this popular activity.
  • Music Night - A wide variety of live music from a range of local musicians, with discounted drinks during happy hour, and free entrance to members.
  • Fitness and exercise - We currently hold Yoga classes and a Fit2Sail exercise class specifically targeted at sailors wanting to improve their agility and stamina, and suitable for all age groups 18-80+. Both these classes are almost all-year, suspended briefly during the peak summer holiday season.

Other events take place from time to time, depending on interest from members. In the past these have included a Guitar and Ukulele Group, and a Dungeons and Dragons evening very popular with the cadets. Members who wish to start a group are welcomed - talk to anyone on the Onshore Committee or email onshore@bhyc.org.uk.

Last but not least - Volunteering

The 'Last of the Summer Wine' group meets every Wednesday morning, and carries out essential maintenance of Club facilities, inside the Club, outside areas and pontoons and slipways etc. This is a huge financial benefit to the Club and is a good way to meet other Members. Break mid-morning for coffee and doughnuts! Email onshore@bhyc.org.uk if you'd like to help out, or just turn up - you will be welcomed with open arms.
