Sail & Power Boat Training


Brading Haven Yacht Club is open all year round we offer

Private Lessons, Adult Learn to Sail Courses, RYA Stages plus Coaching for Stage 3 and above.

All sessions run in small groups we will also hold a BHYC Activity Fun Week where we will have sailing , kayaking and stand up paddleboarding.

Cadets must be 8 years old to take part in the RYA courses.

RYA Youth Learn to Sail Stage 1

Stage 1 is the starting point for young people aged 8 and over wanting to learn to sail. This course is specially tailored to younger sailors and will teach the basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. During this course we aim to maximise water time, there is some theory associated with the syllabus

Aim: After this course you should be able to steer and understand basic principles.

RYA Youth Learn to Sail Stage 2

This course is designed to give you further confidence and build on your Stage 1 skills and is aimed at those with previous sailing experience who would like to progress to a competent standard in moderate wind conditions.

Aim: By the end of this course, the student will have a range of sailing skills and background knowledge. They will be well on their way to being a confident small boat sailor. If you have not done a lot of sailing and did this course last year, you may want to repeat it so that you are confident enough to go onto Stage 3.

This course will be completed in H10s and Teras

RYA Youth Learn to Sail Stage 3

YSS Stage 3 is the natural progression from Stage 2.

Aim: Having completed Stage 3 you will be able to sail in any direction, rig and launch your boat, with these skills and knowledge you are a sailor and not a beginner.

This course will be conducted in Teras and Picos.

Tera Camp

This is the natural progression from Stage 3

Aim: When you have completed Stage 3 and you have the skills to sail a Tera this camp is to help you improve your confidence.

This course will be completed in RS Teras

Laser Coaching

This course is for cadets who want to build on their sailing techniques so they can take part in club racing or beyond. The course will take place in Lasers and it will follow the RYA advanced module Start Racing.

This course will be completed in Lasers; you can use your own boat or a Club boat.

NSS Level 1 & 2 Adults

This course is for adults (16+) who want to learn to sail with likeminded beginners away from young eyes and their helpful comments.

Aim: An introduction to sailing, covering the RYA NSS Level 1 Start Sailing and NSS Level 2 Basic Skills modules. On completion of this course you will have the basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds. Capsize recovery will be conducted in a controlled manner.

This course offers a variety of boats to sail including Swans and an RS Quest.

BHYC Activity Fun Week

This week is about having fun on the water trying out different activities and making new friends.

The cadets will have an opportunity to sail, and to try kayaking and paddleboarding. Cadets must be 8 years or over to join this week.

All of the above is subject to change to keep in line with Government Guidelines
