The weekend of 9th10th August marked a milestone for rowing on the Isle of Wight as Brading Haven Gig Rowers, a section of Brading Haven Yacht Club, hosted their first annual Summer Gig Regatta.

This was the Island's first event of its kind, welcoming rowing and sailing gigs. Brading Haven Gig Rowers, founded just over two years ago, celebrated this achievement with a weekend of rowing, racing, sailing and socialisingbringing together clubs and communities united by a love of the sport.

Brading Haven Gig Rowers were fortunate to win Seahorse from Swanage Sea Rowing Club in December. As Seahorse is equipped with sails, and with the rowing section being part of a yacht club, members felt it was important to embrace both traditionsrowing and sailing gigs.

The highlight of the weekend came on Sunday, when history was made: gigs were sailed on the Isle of Wight for the very first time. Crews from Brading Haven Gig Rowers , Yarmouth Gig Rowers and Langstone Pilot Gig Club, rigged Seahorse and Spirit, unfurling their sails in Bembridge's summer breeze. It was a magical sight, two traditional gigs, sails full, gliding across the water an unforgettable moment for all involved.

Sandie Gallard - Jupp Captain of Rowing at Brading Haven Yacht Club, reflected on the significance:

"This has been a truly special weekend for all of us. Both Langstone Pilot Gig Club and Yarmouth Gig Club have given us incredible support over the past few years, and it meant so much to have them join us. For many rowers, this was the first time they had ever seen a gig under sailit's a memory we'll treasure."

In addition to celebrating gig rowing, the weekend also supported a worthy cause. Proceeds from entry donations will go to Mountbatten Isle of Wight Hospice helping to fund the vital care and support they provide to the community on the island

With the success of the inaugural regatta, anticipation is already building for the next event in 2026, when rowers and sailors will return to celebrate once again.
